Lot's of new stuff soon

Journal Entry: Wed Mar 26, 2008, 2:08 PM

I'm in the process of sorting and editing some photos of birds in flight. I took my Canon and the new 300mm to the pier to give it work out, but the surf was bad with no surfers out. But there was an unusual ammount of bird and aquatic activity. Lots of pelicans and gulls. Even got a few good shots of a seal that was clowning next to the pier.

There is going to be about 20+ shots in all. So if you watch me here, this is a sort of heads up for a large posting of stuff.

Hi. I’m doing much better since the last journal. And thanks to K-ee-ran [link] for going ahead and placing a boot on my derrière, and everybody else for your encouragement. It really did help a lot.

Been tagged by kroelav [link] , an IB local talent here, who we’ve probably passed going opposite ways on the street, but have never quite met up yet. I’m just going to stick to the facts, so y’all can stop sweating, I won’t put you in the hot seat. However, if you wish to volunteer to tag yourself……………….. RIGHT! Who am I kidding.

1) I live in Imperial Beach. San Diego’s best kept secret. You’ve seen some photos of it here, maybe.

2) As a result of living here, I’ve eaten in the IB Forum, the most southwesterly bar and grill in America, stood on the very corner of the United States, thrown a rock at the most Northwesterly part of Mexico, and conversed international with no toll charges.

3) Bragging. I just got a new Canon 400D. True love at last.

4) I do love to ride my body board, but have serious issues with cold water.

5) Have I mentioned I like chocolate. I’m an absolute fiend for dark chocolate. Really dark dark chocolate.

6) Confession; I have’nt looked at my dev-watch list for a long time. It’s too crazy. I’m going to just visit galleries in alphabetical order, and get caught up with everything that way. SO it may be a month between visits, but watch out! It’s invasion time when I get there. And so my sanity remains intact.

7) I love all the polls people do. Instant fun. Just a weird little thing for me. If you want to see me smile, post a poll. I’ll be right on it.

8) I enjoy doing night time photos, a lot.

I first saw this on man1nblack’s [link] front page, and I thought it’s a really cool idea, so as long as I’m at it, here we go.

If I really have to choose only one.

Time for a little self promotion. I tried out a new thing for me. Pasting poetry text onto a photo to make a literary composition type thing. (there must a name for doing that). My friend Devika Fernando [link] was kind to let me use a poem of hers. So, if you still have time to be hanging around here, please take a look at it, and let fly with any suggestions or comments. All and any would be appreciated. Here’s the link
[link]

Frankensusan [link] used a photo of mine to do a painting. Turned out marvelous, and it was an honor to have inspired somebody so. Here’s the result [link]

A friend named Chris Baumann [link] did an edit of Wild Flower I which can be found here [link] and I will soon be posting in my own gallery. He’s a bright young man with a lot of enthusiasm for photography. A good guy to bother if you have any questions or need any pointers.

And since I’m not doing an actual feature this time, here’s a random grab bag of stuff from my favorites, the photos themselves really need no further words – click it if you dare.

Now with the weather getting nicer I won't have time for all of that. Yard work will take priority. However, when the weather gets really hot, I'll be back at it. Meantime, here is a link I thought you might enjoy. A friend from AZ. sent it to me and the scenery is beautiful. Hope you like it.

That's how I do it too. Takes longer to sort them out than it does to go out and shoot em. Usually half go straight to the trash for some obvious defect, focus or exposure or something like that. And often there's one or two that are standouts too. It's the in betweeners that start to get difficult. Sometimes I get so I just go through and pick the top three, and leave at that. Other times I just can't bear to part with any.

I know. I put them side by side on my Corel program, and go back and forth looking at every detail to see which one or ones are best.

Sort of a work in progress. If I'm really taking my time, I'll shoot a few frames and stop and see how it looks. Then try a different angle and compare. And so on, until I've narrowed the process to some really nice or interesting angles. So I tend to like the tail end of a session best. Sometimes though they all turn out really good, then it's hard to decide which ones to post.

Really,? That's interesting. I wonder why the end would be the best. ( Of course it could be because the best is always saved for last.) :D I don't take quite that many at one time, but maybe 10.

Unless I have a new program to apply, I usually just leave my old stuff alone. But I do often times go and re-shoot something based on what the results were the first time around. Since I've gotten a digital SLR I've been able to shoot a subject from every angle, exposure and and zoom value in one sitting. Sometimes i'll come up with 200 photos of the same bush or flower bed. I've found that it's often the ones toward the end of the session that turn out the best.
